You likely already know how to prepare for a hurricane each year. But this year, with a heavier-than-usual storm forecast and a pandemic to consider, it’s more important than ever to prepare early. With these concerns in mind, we're sharing some key hurricane prep guidelines to help you feel calm, confident and informed about the season ahead.
Stock up on Supplies Now to Account for Delays
Because of how the pandemic has affected the availability of the supplies you’d normally have easy access to, start ordering and buying what you can now. We recommend gathering what you can find from this list as soon as possible, if you do not have these items on hand already:
Batteries for flashlights, radios, fans, etc.
Battery-operated or hand-crank radios
Bottled water
Cash
Diapers and wet wipes
Disposable plates, cups and utensil
Generators and fuel
Medications
Non-perishable food items (three-day supply per family member)
Non-electric coolers
Pet food (three-day supply per pet)
Portable phone chargers
Tarps and tie-down kits
Toilet paper
Gather your Medications & Essential First Aid Supplies - Every year, take a look at your first aid kit and restock it with new supplies, like aspirin or other pain relievers, antacids, bandages and gauze, a thermometer, scissors and antiseptics.
Prepare Now For an Evacuation
Be sure to plan for what to do if evacuation orders happen and share these plans with your family in case you are not together when an emergency occurs. You’ll need to bring your supplies with you while evacuating (including your emergency supplies and pet supplies), as it will likely be unclear what stores will be open and where.
